Meet Your Host: Colin Cartwright

Colin began his journey in the industrial automation industry over 30 years ago, starting as a controls engineer in the UK before moving to Canada, where he worked with some of the biggest names in the industry. His career has spanned every corner of automation, from relay logic and PLCs to modern IP67 connectivity and decentralized I/O.

For years, Colin toyed with the idea of launching a podcast focused on the real world of automation - the kind of show he wished existed when he was just starting out. After all, there’s no shortage of flashy tech talk, but what’s often missing is the gritty, practical insight from people who’ve been in the trenches.

That’s where Machine Builder Talk comes in.

Originally launched with his colleague, Craig, the podcast is now fully hosted and produced by Colin. It’s his personal passion project, a platform to give back to the industry that’s given him so much. Every episode is packed with candid conversations, real-world stories, and honest advice for machine builders, controls designers, and automation professionals of all stripes.

But the goal goes beyond just sharing knowledge. Colin is passionate about encouraging the next generation, especially young people and women, to consider a career in industrial automation. He believes the future of the industry depends on fresh ideas, diverse voices, and a willingness to challenge the status quo.

So whether you’re new to the field or a seasoned veteran, you’re in the right place.

Colin Cartwright - Co-Host of Machine Builder Talk podcast

About Colin

Colin Cartwright is a seasoned automation expert and the Director of Business Development at Murrelektronik, where he helps packaging machine builders and manufacturers across North America simplify their control systems, embrace decentralized automation, eliminate wiring complexity, and reduce downtime.

With over 30 years of hands-on experience in industrial controls and automation, Colin brings a unique blend of technical depth, industry insight, and a little bit of British humour to every conversation. His journey began in the UK, where he played football, served in the British Army, and stumbled into the world of automation. After cutting his teeth as a controls engineer, he decided to take a vacation to Canada in 1995 and ended up staying.

Throughout his career, Colin has worked with some of the biggest names in manufacturing - from automotive giants to food & beverage producers and high-speed packaging OEMs. He’s known for his practical approach to solving real-world design challenges and for championing smarter, more modular automation strategies that save time and reduce dependency on skilled labour.

Now based in Cambridge, just outside Toronto, Colin is a self-confessed technology geek and gadget enthusiast. If he's not taking something apart to see how it works, he's exploring the latest technology, whether in automation, AI, or photography.

When he’s not helping machine builders and manufacturers simplify their control systems, Colin enjoys experimenting with AI, writing industry articles, and recently published a book titled ChatGPT For B2B Sales. He also loves walking his two mischievous golden retrievers, Bandit and Nellie, with his partner Philippa. A lifelong Liverpool FC supporter, he proudly celebrates their success while embracing new challenges and innovations in work and life.
